Hippeastrums

For a truly magnificent plant, you must consider the Hippeastrum, as these plants add brilliant texture and colour to any garden. The plants grow to about 70 centimetres and produce large, trumpet like flowers borne on the end of green tubular stems. The flowers are highly decorative and come in a large variety of colours such as white, pink, orange, red or yellow and can be single or double blooms or vary with different coloured stripes. The leaves are long and green and contrast well with the flower spike.

Hippeastrums are hardy, versatile plants and can be grown in full sun or dappled shade. They make great border plants against a hedged backdrop or shrubbery garden and add wonderful height to a bed of spring flowering annuals and ground covers. Planted in clumps, these plants will give you a bright, spectacular display.

Hippeastrums require little care and have only a few growing requirements. The plants thrive in moist, well drained humus rich soil. This can be achieved by adding organic compost to the soil. During the spring flowering season, fertilise with Searles Flourish to enhance flower colour and promote longer flowering blooms.
